Tempest – A Coming Storm – 1987

Tempest was where brothers Jamie and Mick Rowe cut their teeth. This is a raw Heavy Metal album that is lightly engineered and produced much to the delight of Heavy Metal fans. The problem, or perhaps the best part of the album was the band had a bit of an inconsistent sound and rough vocals. Maybe it is the best part. Oddly Joe English (Hard to imagine) provided additional drum tracks. The story goes that Pure Metal records actually signed the band by accident thinking they had actually signed an entirely different band out of Ohio.

John Fischer – Dark Horse – 1982

Some say that John Fischer’s 1969 album “The Cold Cathedral ” was the first contemporary Christian album coming out a few months before Larry Norman’s “Upon This Rock”. I understand that not all agree but I think we can all agree that Fischer had a long a storied career in Christian music. Dark Horse was his 8th album and a good example to him adapting to the 80’s. The album is an easy listening/praise album and as Fischer really knew what he was doing at this point in his career it is very well done. Joining Fischer on background vocals were Bob Carlisle (Allies) , and Bryan Duncan (The Sweet Comfort Band).

The Morning Stars – I’ve Been Blessed By The Hands Of The Lord – 1979

I really don’t know much about The Morning Stars other than they are good. I had someone ask for a Southern Gospel album so I went and searched our library for one that perhaps was not as well known. I found this gem and although I know nothing about it I quite liked it. I have always had a soft spot for southern gospel music as it is my belief that this is where Rock & Roll came from. So if you like this style of music sit back and enjoy.

Jerusalem – In His Majesty’s Service – 1985

This live album from Jerusalem was recorded in Shreveport, Louisiana and Dallas, Texas. It was strange in that it features 4 at the time unreleased songs. Usually Live albums are a sort of greatest hits but in this case it was really kind of a fresh album. The tour was to support their “Can’t Stop Us Now” album that had a Pop sound but this album is straight out hard rock. Kind of implies to me that “Can’t Stop Us Now” wasn’t really a good representation of the band. That said I love both albums and this album is one of the better live albums of the 80’s.

Charlie Peacock – Charlie Peacock – 1986

This was supposed to be Charlie’s breakthrough album that was supposed to solidify his secular presence. Unfortunately that didn’t work out. A&M bailed on the album and it eventually ended up on Island records. Island was unable to properly promote the album so it didn’t have any secular success. One of the stranger production ideas was to include the single from his previous album, “Lie Down In The Grass” on this album. All in all the record companies all screwed up what should have been a top 40 album. The beats and synth were perfect for the time and the album was easily as good as anything on the radio at the time. Oh well it’s left for us to enjoy, what a great album.

Kim Boyce – Kim Boyce – 1986

This was Kim’s first solo album. She had appeared as a background singer and touring singer for many artists including Russ Taff and Joe English. The album has a nice female pop sound and is what was coming out at the time so it’s not overly creative. It spawned 4 singles which is quite an achievement really. The single “Here” made it to #1. Some Kim trivia is that she was Miss Florida in 1983 and competed for Miss America in 1984.

This was a sampler from Myrrh that featured known and unknown artists. Here is a bit about these artists and their respective tracks;

Tata Vega – “In Your Light” – Tata Vega is a secular artist who had great success in the 70’s with stage musicals. As far as I can tell she never released a Christian album. The track appears to be unreleased.

Bob Carlisle – “Heaven Is Waiting” & “Teach Me How” – Bob Carlisle is best known for being in the band Allies in the 80’s and had several solo projects in the 90’s. Both tracks appears to be unreleased.

Bryan Duncan – “Come As You Are” – Bryan is well known for being in Sweet Comfort Band and then a very successful solo career. The track appears to be unreleased.

Matthew Ward – “Light Of The World” – Matthew is well known for being in
2nd Chapter Of Acts and then a very successful solo career. The track appears to be unreleased.

Howard McCrary – “In Your Presence” – Howard released a solo album in 1985 but is better known for being a member of The California Raisins. This track Appears to be unreleased.

Kim Boyce/John Elefante – “Helpless” – Kim Boyce had several Pop Christian albums in the 80’s. John Elefante is well known as a member of Kansas and as a very successful producer in the Christian music scene. The track appears to be unreleased.

Rick Riso – “Heaven Must Have Sent You” – Rick has released 3 Christian albums and this track appeared on “Shouting At The Walls” as a CD Bonus Track.

Benny Hester – “Then You Call My Name” – Benny is a well known solo Christian artist. This track Appears to be unreleased.

Tommy Funderburk – “Lift Up My Voice” – Tommy is best known for being one of the members of The Front. He did also have a solo album in 2005. This track Appears to be unreleased.

Bloodgood – Rock In A Hard Place – 1988

This was the third release from Bloodgood. Many consider this to be their most “commercial” sounding album. It is easily my preferred album by them probably because there are tracks that lean more Hard Rock than Heavy Metal. The original recording had poor low end leading to complaints about the production quality. The 2015 re-release on CD was remastered to solve this problem. All in all I like this album which is saying a lot as I really don’t like Heavy Metal.

Leon Patillo – Dance Children Dance – 1979

This was Leon’s first solo album after leaving Santana and his first Christian album. The album is very easy listening and has a good amount if the funk sound Leon is known for. The album spawned 2 singles, “Dance Children Dance” which made it to # 12, and “Temple To The Sky” made it to #7. Pretty impress result from a first album but then again Leon’s sound was tailor made for the adult CCM charts.
