The 6th studio album from Petra “Not Of This World” had a very similar sound to their previous album “More Power To Ya”. Strangely they were actually touring in support of “More Power To Ya” but took a break to record this album. I think that in part accounts for the similar sounds. Even Bob Hartman said that he considered the album a sequel. Strangely producer Jonathan Brown actually initially didn’t use Petra drummer Louie Weaver for the drum tracks instead inviting studio musician Keith Edwards to sit in. In the end Louie Weaver did contribute to the project. I think this must have been due to some scheduling conflict as if I were in Louis’s place I would have been done with the band on the spot. Louis however stayed on with the band until 2003. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Gospel Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, Choir or Chorus but were beat out by Larnelle Harris & Sandi Patti.

The reason the LP, cassette, and CD were different has to do with formatting. LPs have the shortest playtime. The beginning of the disc has a different frequency than the end. CDs have the next shortest playtime. Cassette tape has the longest playtime. It can be twice as long as CD. So, songs and solos were edited for continuity. This way everyone gets the majority of the music, without the gab and as few non-critical songs as possible are left off.

Louie was not used because JDB preferred working with his drummer and bass player, because recording went faster and they did what he asked. Louie is very strong-willed and so was JDB. Louie gave JDB too much resistance and they had a feud that was later settled, somewhat. This is well documented elsewhere. I had conversations with them both about it before JDB passed, when Louie was recording for me.
Louie didn’t play much on Petra records. Drums were later programmed and overdubbed during the E Brothers days. There isn’t one lick of drums on Petra Praise. JL programmed all of those. It wasn’t until their last couple of records that Louie played drums like drummers typically do. That said, there are other uncredited drummers on those albums.
