Paul Clark – Awakening From The Western Dream – 1989

Paul Clark was one of the most prolific CCM artists of the 1970’s through the 90’s. Strangely he only ever had 3 CCM singles which is absolutely absurd considering the quantity and quality of his work. I think this is my favourite album from him yet. I haven’t listened to then all yet but this one really is my kind of music. Many artists in the CCM industry get more mellow as they go along but not Paul. This is his 10th album and it is a solid pop effort with a great 80’s sound. On the mellow end “As Long As I’m Still Breathing” should have easily singled on the CCM charts especially in 1989. Somehow I missed Paul in the 80’s but I sure like him now.

Paul Clark – A New Horizon – 1981

This is Paul’s 8th album but it had a first for him. The album had his first CCM charting single with “Tell Them All” making it to #18. Paul certainly had many great songs before this but finally CCM saw fit to put him on the charts. As usual however the charting single is not the best track on the album. That would be “Here To Stay” which is an excellent duet with Kelly Willard. It’s a much better track that should have singled. The album has a Soft Rock sound with a jazzy feel in places and is pretty good but a little repetitive in places. While a good album this is not his best work as his 70’s work was phenomenal but his 80’s work was more mainstream.

Paul Clark – Drawn To The Light – 1982

Though Paul was not commonly known by most Christian music listeners he was a very accomplished musician and had several albums through the 70’s and 80’s. He grew up in troubled times and turned to alcohol and drugs in his teens. However in 1970 when his college years were cut short he moved to a cabin and came to terms with the world by engaging himself with God’s word. What would result is one of the best musicians of the time though personally I don’t think he ever got the recognition he deserved. This 1982 album leans towards the more easy listening music of the period but lyrically it really stood out to me. So even if easy listening is not your preferred genre give this one a chance as lyrically it’s up there with the best.

Paul Clark – Out Of The Shadow – 1984

Paul was one of the pioneer’s of the Christian music scene. His first album was recorded in 1971 and he had album’s all through the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. This album came out in 1984 and has a bit of an Imperials feel to it. I understand why I didn’t listen to Paul in the 80’s as he’s not my style of music especially in 1984. I am wondering however why I never heard of him back then. I mean this guy had tons of albums and they are very good for this style. Quite frankly they are as good as any Imperials release of the period. I’m pretty sure most of you who are reading this had heard of him as he simply was very popular. Anyway the album is a great AOR album and while not my personal style of music I recognize good music when I hear it and this album is good. If for no other reason listen to it because Phil Keaggy plays some excellent guitar solo’s on the album.
