Various – Never Say Dinosaur – 1996

I had no idea this one existed until I stumble on it a week ago. It’s a Petra tribute album released in 1996 by Star Song with some of biggest artists of the mid 90’s. I am just guessing here but I think the producers asked the artists to “really make your cover your own.” The result? Some of these songs aren’t even recognizable. I don’t know if it’s just me but I find most of these covers to be horrible. I did like the Audio Adrenaline and Caprill And My Sister’s Garden tracks but I really struggled with the rest. But hey I’m just a critic that doesn’t always “get it.” How about you, what do you think of this project?

  1. Hello!

I’m largely in agreement with your assessment of this album. There’s just a few songs on it that I actually like. I found this album not too long after it came out. Some of the songs were unfamiliar to me anyway, so I can’t compare those to the originals by Petra.

There is one particular song that took a few listens for it to really grow on me. I had never heard Petra’s original of it until later. I was not too impressed with the original, to be honest. I think the remake on the Never Say Dinosaur disc is actually much better. It’s true that it is very different from the original, but the remake transforms it and fits the lyrics better, IMO. What song do I speak of? All The Kings Horses! Plankeye’s version is fantastic! Play it again and again and crank it up! Forget about the original and just listen to it as its own unique song. I always hate that it fades out as quickly as it does at the end!

My wife is not a fan of most modern music, and the style Plankeye displayed is not her normal cup of tea. But she LOVES All the Kings Horses by Plankeye! If you give it a few more listens, it might grow on you too, especially if you have the awesome and glorious coming of the Lord in your mind as you listen.

    God Bless!

    Joe
