Heartbeat – The Winner – 1988

While this was their 5th album this was their second attempt at getting on the secular charts. Surprisingly they did just make it onto the charts in Apr 88 but they only peaked out at #70. Not too bad for what was essentially a worship and studio band that just turned it up for a few albums. I have to admit as much as I kind of dislike this band I am impressed that Myrrh was able to partner with Priority Records to get this album on the radio. That said I am trying to figure out why they would included the 12″ version of the single on the album. Admittedly the song wasn’t a huge hit but still they put out a 12″ to try to get a few more sales but then they included that version on the album. That said nothing about this whole Heartbeats idea made sense to me. That said if you like a little 80’s Europop this is the album for you and it actually is pretty good.

Heartbeat – Voice To The Nation – 1986

I have to admit that here in Canada we had no idea who Heartbeat was never mind the controversy they caused. This is their 3rd album and I think by now most of the controversy had died down. They still proclaimed to be a charting pop band but really they were a backup worship band that made the majority of their money playing on other peoples albums. This album does not have a secular single release and that’s probably a good thing as it did not deserve to be on the secular charts. As for the album it is primarily a worship album with a couple pop tunes mixed in. The problem with the pop tracks is that the vocals do not fit them. We saw this several times in the 80’s as worship oriented bands tried to do a pop album and failed miserably due to vocals. This album isn’t too bad if you listen to it for what it is and that’s a worship album.

Various – Twelve New Faces – 1989

This 1989 release from Myrrh/Word Records featured new, mainly unreleased artists. Quite frankly I was surprised this album was actually released by them as a lot of these songs have a very low JPM score (Jesus per minute). It is almost entirely New Wave/Pop but it does have a Zion song which does not fit on the album at all. Nothing against the song it just doesn’t fit on this sampler. You should honestly listen to this album as it has some real gold unreleased songs.
