The All Saved Freak Band – Brainwashed – 1975

This is the second album from All Saved Freak Band. The recording of this album came after a very strange period in the history of the band. Lead guitarist Glenn Schwartz had actually been with both James Gang and Pacific Gas & Electric. He left the secular music scene to join an Ohio religious group called Church of the Risen Christ and ASFB was the musical arm of the church. Today most people recognize the church as a cult and there’s actually a book about it called Fortney Road: Life, Death, and Deception in a Christian Cult. In 1975 before this album, Glenn’s family had him abducted by famed cult deprogrammer Ted Patrick. I’m a little confused at how you abduct a 35 year old man without going to jail but obviously the whole thing didn’t work and this album’s cheeky name was a result of this whole event. This album is their most Rock oriented albums and is likely one of if not the best rock album of the era. That said not many people had this album as it really wasn’t well known and had very little distribution. It had some distribution because it is out there but nothing like Larry Norman was getting at the time. This album has become legendary with the resurgence of seventies music and I would say slightly tongue in cheek that it has a cult following.

The All Saved Freak Band – For Christians, Elves, And Lovers – 1976

The story of the All Saved Freak Band is a fascinating one and I would urge you to read up about them and everything that stood in their way of getting their music out to the populace. But here we will concentrate on their second album. At some point the band discovered that J.R.R. Tolkien was a Christian. He was actually the Catholic brand of religion but a pretty devout one apparently. Anyway the band was a fan and they brought together the fantasy world of The Lord Of The Rings with Evangelism and this album was the result. This album helped the band branch out to a whole new audience and was a big hit due to this invented theme. A copy of this album has actually been added to the Tolkien Collection at Marquette University. This album is best listened to it in it’s entirety and in the original order as the album definitely has a conceptual feel and flow.

All Saved Freak Band – Sower – 1980

This is the final album form All Saved Freak Band. The band had actually split up before this release. The break up sounds like it was a bit of a mess as the band cited irreconcilable differences and their church had a scandal involving children. At this point the band had dwindled down a few members but the quality wasn’t effected. The album was again released on their own label which they had renamed “War Again Inc”. The album is more of their normal 70’s style but it doesn’t sound like the band was ready to evolve to an 80’s sound. The good news is that the band did come together in 2006 to regain control of their music which had been handed over to Hidden Vision Records. The band did not however release a new album but instead continued their individual ministries.
