Dieter Falk – Dieter Falk – 1989

This is the third album from Dieter and I have now listened to all three. Originally I listened to “Today” and just loved it so I hunted out more of his albums. Unfortunately I have not liked the other two I have listened to. This one is a complete instrumental album and I always struggle with that style. All of the tracks on this album leave me sitting there waiting for the vocals to start because they all sound like, well, songs. Personally I prefer the instrumental writing style of bands like Tangerine Dream because their songs aren’t in a traditional song format and thus I rarely anticipate lyrics on their tracks. But let’s get to the positives of this album. Dieter is a very good keyboardist and I do really like his musical stlyings. So this is still a great album but it screamed for a vocalist to complete it.

Dieter Falk – Instrumental Journey – 1987

I recently listened to Falk’s second album and really liked it. This is his first album but I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much. I’m a little confused at this album because it appears it was first released in 1985 in Germany with the title “This Time” on Pila Records. It appears it was re-released in 1987 with this title on Myrrh. I was originally thinking that the 1985 release was a German release and this was the English release. One problem with that is that it’s an instrumental album so there wouldn’t be a need for releases in different language. Anyway let’s discuss the album quickly. It is another synth album with a lot of great synth instrumental tracks. I don’t think it’s as good as his second release but it is good but nothing here is going in my regular rotation.

Dieter Falk – Today – 1987

Here’s another one we didn’t get in North America. Dieter was a German musician and producer that put out a few albums himself. This is his second album and I do not understand why someone didn’t bring this album across the ocean. The German release was on Pila Records but Myrrh picked it up for a further European release. I don’t understand why Myrrh didn’t try to bring this to us as the album is fantastic. The album is instrumental except for 4 tracks where there were guest vocalists. Brigitte Petereit sings 2 tracks and did a pretty good job but never had a release herself. One track has Swedish singer Charlotte Höglund who is responsible for me finding this album as I found her in the credits. One track is sung by Steve Tolley who is a complete mystery but a fantastic vocalist. He sings on “Gospel Train” and makes that song the obvious album single. All the instrumental tracks are vocal ready and just needed some lyrics and a singer. That said I have some sympathy for Dieter in that it was HIS album and bringing in a bunch of guest vocalists does cause an album to have an uneven feel. That said this is a great album and deserves to be heard.
