Glenn Kaiser, Larry Howard, Trace Balin, Darrell Mansfield – The Blues Night – 1994

I’m a little unclear as to the origins of this concert. The album itself says “The Blues Night” has been recorded during the Blues – Tour in November ’93 in Gouda, Holland”. I have no idea who’s tour this was but it really doesn’t matter but the historian in me wanted to know. Anyway this album is a real treat because of the inclusion of Trace Balin. Before this album she was better known as a pop oriented artist but since this album she became known as a blues singer. Musically there is no stand out moment on the album but that’s not a criticism. In fact the album is solid from start to finish and there’s not a bad track on it. Each artist contributes a few tracks and it all comes together for the full album.

Trace Balin – Here And Now – 1989

As Trace’s first album started to hit the charts Dayspring got her back in the studio ASAP. They could tell the first album was going to take off so they wanted a second album out there as quick as possible. This album proved she wasn’t a one album wonder as this one also hit the charts. It had 3 top 20 singles with “Well Done” making it to #10, “Never Let It Be Said” to #19, and “Eye Of The Hurricane” to #8. Not quite as successful as her debut but nothing to sneeze at. The album is very similar and I’m relatively sure the record company chose the songs from their library but Trace did get some cowriting credits this album. That said the songs were solid pop choices and it’s another great album if you enjoy female pop. Funny that history would hold Trace out as a great blues singer but at this point in her career it was all pop all the time. That said I am listening to her albums in order so maybe I’ll start to hear a transition in the next two albums.

Trace Balin – Champions – 1988

This was Trace’s first album and lets just say she came out with a bang. The album sprouted 3 top 10 CCM chart songs, “Only For You” Made it to #4, “We Need Each Other” #5, and “All I Wanna Do” to #6. Rounding out the singles for the album was “We Are An Army” which made it to #17. That’s pretty darn good for a first album. That said the album was set up for success as some of the top songwriters in the industry penned the songs and even Greg X. Volz did some backup work. Personally my favourite track is “Rock These Rafters” which is an excellent song and I really think it might have suited Petra a few years earlier. The opening track “Champions” is also pretty good and displays her great vocal skills.
