Bloodgood – Out of the Darkness – 1989

This was the 4th studio release for Michael Bloodgood and the band. For this album Guitarist David Zaffiro and drummer Mark Welling were out and Kevin Whisler and Paul Jackson on guitars and drums, respectively were in. Of course Michael Bloodgood maintained his position on bass and Les Carlsen continued vocals. Fans of Bloodgood said this album was a bit of as return to their previous heavier work but myself I believe it’s all in the production. This album doesn’t quite have that commercial Pop influence so it sounds much more raw which is a much better sound for Bloodgood. My personal take away track is the Rez Band reminiscent track “Hey! You”

Adrian Snell – Feed The Hungry Heart – 1984

While Adrian is probably best known for his worship musical style you might be pleasantly surprised by this album. There are 2 very good pop songs on this album. The lead track “Welcome To The Circus” is a fantastic tune once you get past the 1 minute intro. I also quite liked “Bathed In Neon” which has a great pop sound. Other than that it’s the usual high quality worship oriented music that made Adrian well known.

Truth – Get It From The Source – 1979

The choir that called itself Truth continued their constant output of music into late 1979 with this album. I believe it is without a doubt the most Disco CCM album ever. I was stunned when listening to this that it was still Truth. While Truth usually puts out albums that I would describe as worship oriented they went way way off script for this one. So get your boogie shoes on and give this album a listen.

Crumbächer – Escape From The Fallen Planet – 1986

After the success of Crumbächer’s first album they signed a new record deal with Frontline Records. Unfortunately this meant that Ojo Taylor and Derri Daugherty weren’t involved in this album. They self produced this album and did a very good job though I think Ojo would have done a better job. This album continues the synth wave sound with some pop feeling and was a nice follow up to Incandescent. The track “Interstellar Satellite” did single on Christian rock stations. The 2010 “25th Anniversary Edition” CD release featured an A cappella version of “Alma Mater”. It is included in the playlist/tracklist.

This was the 12 Inch Single for Stryper’s upcoming Album To Hell with the Devil. It features the Album Single “Free” and the B side had “Calling on You” and “The Rock That Makes Me Roll” which was actually from their previous album “Soldiers Under Command”

Steve Taylor And Some Band – Limelight – 1986

In 1985 Steve Taylor appeared at the Greenbelt festival at Castle Ashby, England. An excellent sound track was recorded and select songs became this album. At this point Steve only had 3 albums out but they provided more than enough material to work with. Steve put together a pretty good band of studio musicians and game them credit as the “Some Band”. Most of the songs appear to have their album arrangements though there are a few things different but unfortunately no extended versions. The album is actually quite short and I’m disappointed they didn’t add a few more tracks which would have easily fit. The highlight of the album for me was his duet with Sheila Walsh covering David Edwards “Not Gonna Fall Away” which was originally from his studio EP “Trans-Atlantic Remixes”

Barnabas – Artifacts And Relics – 2000

This 2000 release of Barnabas artifacts and relics is just fantastic. It has 5 unreleased tracks and a 24 minute recording of a rehearsal. The lead track (Batter Up) really should have been on an album, it’s actually one of my favourite Barnabas tracks now. The other new tracks are good though I have to say that Shauna Marie may actually be a lullaby. The 24 minute rehearsal track is an absolute gem. It gives us a bit of a candid view (listen) of the band. Much discussion of coffee just made me feel like I was there. Just an excellent release here.

Tempest – Eye of the Storm – 1989

The second and last album from Tempest had a more commercial Metal sound than their first. This album saw a change of band members with Darren Lee taking over bass and Bobby Andrews on drums and apparently Joe English also supplied a drum track for the album. A year after this album came out the band dissolved but I don’t know if they did a tour in support of the album or not. There isn’t actually a lot of info on Tempest in the 80’s but Mick Rowe did revive the band in 2017. Along with Thom Schultman and Rex D.Scott from X-Sinner they recorded a 4 song EP and apparently played several live dates.

The Archers – Stand Up! – 1979

Stand Up! was The Archers fifth studio album and the first that Janice Archer would take on lead vocals responsibility. The album had lots of well known guest appearances as well as a whos who of studio musicians. I think this was one of their more uptempo albums they put out and this album actually had a bit of a commercial radio sound. “Pickin’ Up The Pieces” peaked at #11 and “Stand Up!” peaked at #9 on the CCM charts. All in all a pretty good album that I actually enjoyed.

Lewis McVay – Spirit of St. Lewis – 1978

This was the first of two solo albums from Lewis McVay after Mustard Seed Faith dissolved. This album is actually kind of a mess. It’s a strange mix of traditional Jesus music, 70’s Rock, Soul, and even a country song. That said I’m not saying the album is bad, just that it is a bunch of different styles. Honestly it’s quite a good album just with so many different styles it does not flow like an album should. Lewis was better known for his next solo album but this one probably would have been more popular if it had stuck to one or two styles. Joining Lewis on Guitar on this album was Don Gerber (Darrell Mansfield Band) and famed studio musician and producer Al Perkins.
