John Michael Talbot & Terry Talbot ‎– No Longer Strangers – 1983

Well here’s the 1983 offering from the Talbot brothers. It’s pretty standard fare for them but there is a highlight on this album. The title track actually has an Eagles feel and it sounds like something from back in their Mason Proffit days. It’s actually good enough for me to add it to my regular rotation. The music may be Eagles but the lyrics are typical of what you would expect form them. That said this may actually be one of their best tracks since the Mason Proffit days.

Mason Proffit – Movin’ Toward Happiness – 1971

You may not know Mason Proffit but I’m guessing you do know John and Terry Talbot. Well before these brothers started their solo CCM career they formed a band called Mason Proffit. This is either their 2nd or 3rd album, I can’t really tell because they released 2 albums in 1971. I must admit this is the first album I heard from Mason Proffit and wow. I simply can’t believe this is the Talbot brothers. Now you probably already know I am not a fan of the brothers but that’s because their style of music is not for me. I do however recognize that they are some of the most talented artists in the CCM industry. They are fantastic musicians and prolific song writers, but I have a new respect for them after listening to this album. They were great folk/country/rock band back in the 70’s and this is a fantastic album. If you want to hear where the Talbot brothers started out you need to listen to this album.

John Michael Talbot – The God Of Life – 1984

I find it increasingly difficult to review John Talbot’s albums. The albums are quite good but they just aren’t my style and they are very repetitive. That said this album did differ a bit in style with a little less guitar and a little more symphonic sound. There’s even a celtic track which was a nice change from him. The album actually several instrumental tracks which I didn’t appreciate as much. So while I complain that John’s stuff all sounds the same to me I guess I’m kind of proven wrong with this album.

This was one of the more boring Sparrow samplers. But in all honesty I was not the target market for this one. It was obviously more pointed at the worship crowd. Below I’ve listed the tracks and the album they came from;

John Michael Talbot – Songs For Worship Volume II – 1985

I assume John’s Songs For Worship Volume I sold pretty well so they did a Songs For Worship Volume II. Of course as the first one was actually name Volume I they probably had plans for this one all along. There isn’t really too much I can say about this album because it’s just a collection of worship songs and as such there really isn’t any stand out tracks. That’s not a bad thing for a worship album so it’s not a criticism. I suspect the album was met with a bit of a yawn however as it didn’t even garner a CCM single. Oh well this is a great Sunday worship album if you like that kind of thing.

John Michael Talbot And Terry Talbot – The Painter – 1980

John Michael is joined by his brother Terry on this album along with The London Chamber Orchestra. It is in the usual Talbot style but with some great harmonies between the brothers. It has a Gothic feel at time which fits with art on the Jacket. If you’re a usual fan of John Michael this album won’t disappoint, you’ll find it to be excellent.

John Michael Talbot – The Lover and the Beloved – 1989

It is difficult to write a review for each John Michael Talbot album. They are essentially all the same. Yes the songs are different but none of them really stand out to me. This album was actually a follow up for his 1985 book of the same name. Now just to be clear I am not faulting John Michael Talbot in any way. He does what he does very well. In fact as far as this style of worship music is concerned he really is the top dog.

John Michael Talbot – The Lord’s Supper – 1978

This 1978 album could have been recorded yesterday and what I mean by that is that the music is timeless.

I am not the biggest fan of worship music but for some reason this album is the exception. While preparing these videos I generally listen to an album three times. Generally this is a rather painful affair when it comes to albums in this genre but strangely I found myself listening to this album a fourth time.

I can’t really break down why I like it but I do. It’s a well arranged album and the choir and orchestra bring a stronger element to Talbot’s music. So even if Talbot’s music is not you’re preferred genre give this one a listen, you might be pleasantly surprised.

John Michael Talbot – Hiding Place – 1990

Hiding Place was John’s first album in 1990. He was quite busy that year releasing 4 albums.

This album follows the same style of personal meditation as his previous albums. This album is somewhat repetitive in that manner but most listeners were happy with the new musical scores.

Despite John’s Roman Catholic faith his albums are well received by Christians of all faiths as evidenced by this album rising to 19th on the Contemporary Christian music charts.
